How skin ages

Michelle D’Aillard explains the mechanics of skin ageing and what we can do to help turn back the clock.

The fact of the matter is that, no matter what we do, our skin ages. However, we do have the ability to influence how quickly. In my first article , you learned how unique skin is and how each layer works together to support healthy, youthful-looking skin. This month, we take a look at other factors that affect the skin’s youthful appearance.

Basics of ageing skin

There are two factors that influence skin's ageing process: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic ageing refers to the natural ageing process and is largely dependent on your individual genetic makeup. There is very little we can do to counter its effects. Extrinsic ageing, on the other hand, is caused by factors we can influence, such as pollution, UV light, stress, lifestyle, habits and skincare.

Intrinsic ageing

Intrinsic ageing occurs as skin cells begin to lose their energy. Just like people, the older it gets, the less energy our skin has. As cellular energy slows down, so does the physiological function of our skin. The end result is a slower cellular metabolism (slower cell turnover), a loss of elasticity and firmness, and the arrival of fine lines and wrinkles. This type of ageing is largely dependent on our unique genetic blueprint and there is nothing we can do about it.

Extrinsic ageing

Extrinsic ageing, on the other hand, occurs when skin cells are exposed to harmful external influences, such as the ones mentioned above. Each of these can create free radicals, which damage skin cells and speed up the ageing process by as much as 100%. Not only do they slow cell renewal, which makes our skin lose its firmness and elasticity, and exacerbates the arrival of fine lines and wrinkles, they also contribute to uneven skin texture, tone and dark spots.

Start now!

It’s never too late to begin protecting your skin and help slow down the ageing process. A proper skincare regimen using products that contain sunscreen, hydrators and antioxidants will give you younger, healthier and more vibrant-looking skin. Choose your products, choose them wisely and use them every day!
