Turn on your tap and pour yourself a glass of water. Tap water for residential and commercial areas would have been filtered many times on an industrial scale, and even treated to some degree to improve its taste and quality, depending on the exact location, original source, plus local policies.
Water is also strictly monitored on a regular basis to ensure any potential contaminants do not exceed safe limits – thankfully, so you can avoid drinking a cocktail you didn’t order! Some municipal water authorities add chlorine to the regional water for disinfection, resulting in an unpleasant taste.

What kind of journey does your local water take before you get to use it or drink it from the tap? What kind of substances end up in wastewater treatment plants and have to be extracted thoroughly before it’s safe enough to eventually be pumped to your neighbourhood and into household pipes or those in the building where you work or study?
Industry: This includes metal refineries and factories producing every item that can be worn, eaten, used or applied. Heavy metals – such as lead and mercury – chemical solvents and trihalomethanes all have the potential to seep from industrial works into our water system. Manufacturing activities pump out small residues of contaminants every day, some of which may land in groundwater and which subsequently have to be cleared away thoroughly to ensure safe, usable and drinkable H2O. Pharmaceuticals: Medicines, including antibiotics and hormone-related drugs or treatments – administered by doctors to humans and by vets to farm animals – are consumed and excreted into lavatories or groundwater on industrial levels.
Agriculture: Besides keeping cows and other livestock plump and fertile with hormones and in good health with antibiotics, farming also engages heavily in pest management. Pesticides and insecticides are used to deter or eradicate a variety of threats to crops and comprise inorganic chemicals that can land in groundwater.
Rigorous filtering, treatment and regular testing take place at water treatment plants to rid our local water of these substances from industrial, agriculture, commercial and residential areas, which would be harmful in large quantities. Thankfully, therefore, a large percentage is removed, deeming household water safe. However, cheeky, microscopic traces may linger, which will not affect us on a day-to-day basis – but we don’t really want to drink them either!
