Sustainable farming, plant-based food supplements, the fusion of nature and science – all of these key principles were adopted by the NUTRILITETM brand an amazing 80 years ago. In this first of several features about this leading brand, we reflect on many years of discovery, milestones, ethical practices, cutting-edge science and top-quality products to support your wellbeing. We look through our archives to see how it all began.

The adventure begins in China

In 1915, Nutrilite company founder Carl F. Rehnborg was living in China where he discovered the power of a plant-based diet. Rehnborg observed the dietary habits of people living in China and wondered if there was a link between the food consumed and their overall health. He observed that people in the countryside who regularly ate fresh produce seemed to thrive better than people in the city whose diets were full of fat, sugar and salt. Rehnborg's observations and experiments led him to identify important but unknown compounds in plants that he called “associated food factors”. He understood that people who lacked these associated food factors in their diets were not eating enough fruits and vegetables, and consequently, they were not as healthy as they could be. Today those associated food factors are known as phytonutrients, which are organic compounds that give plants their colour and protect them from environmental stresses.

Respect for nature

One of the founding principles of Nutrilite is sustainability. Rehnborg purchased a 3.4-acre farm so that he could grow his own ingredients without using any pesticides, chemicals or herbicides – instead, he followed "eco rules" and let nature optimise nature from day one. This ethos is still central to Nutrilite and NutriCertTM certified farms today. Nutrilite has always respected the ecosystem and continues its harmonious relationship with nature.

Scientific expertise

The brand also has one of the largest scientific research teams in the nutritional supplements industry, drawing on world-renowned expertise in nutrition and product development. Nutrilite's team of experts strictly monitors the entire NUTRILITE production process from seed to supplement , always harnessing the complementary powers of science and nature to obtain top quality ingredients and to ensure the supreme performance of its food supplements.

Social responsibility

Nutrilite not only supports the local communities around its sustainable farms, but has also made huge contributions towards helping people live better lives worldwide. For example, Nutrilite scientists developed a micronutrient powder that contains 15 vitamins and minerals essential for child development called NUTRILITE™ Little Bits. Furthermore, the Power of 5 campaign was launched to build awareness about the critical role nutrition plays in early childhood development and, ultimately, to help children reach their fifth birthdays.

A world leader

In 1934, Carl Rehnborg introduced his first vitamin/mineral/phytonutrient supplement that is the ancestor of NUTRILITE DOUBLE X. Today, NUTRILITE is the world's No. 1 selling vitamins and dietary supplements brand*.
