Don’t let extra screen time affect your eyesight – with these helpful tips!

From the moment we wake up and let the morning sun filter through our eyelids, our eyes act as our windows to the world. As well as allowing us to view everything, from blue skies to our loved ones’ faces, our eyes are also on the front line when we sit looking at our screens, walk-in polluted areas, or expose ourselves to the sun or air-conditioned environments. Essentially, our eyes are subjected to many sources of irritation. And, as the weather gets colder, the days get shorter and we spend even more time looking at screens, protecting our eyes becomes more important than ever.

As COVID-19 lockdowns were introduced, many people around the world have been forced to spend more time indoors, which often translated to more time looking at screens. In fact, a study involving 4,108 participants from nine European countries found that people increased their screen time by an average of 65% during the coronavirus pandemic1. Gadgets such as computers, tablets and smartphones emit blue light, a form of light that can be harmful to the light-sensitive retina in our eyes over time.

Tips to optimise screen time

It is an inevitable reality of our digital lives that we cannot eliminate screen time from our lifestyles – for either adults or kids. However, we can adopt healthy strategies to minimise the impacts of screens. To help you not only limit or improve your screen time but also enhance your general eye health, we have created a list of helpful tips and tricks:

  1. Vision Direct UK recommends following the 20-20-20 rule. This entails looking away from your screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds to look at something that is at least 20 feet (6 metres) away.2

  2. We tend to blink up to 70% less when looking at a screen, meaning that fewer tears cover the entire surface of the cornea. To counteract the dryness this can cause, be sure to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water .

  3. Place your computer or workspace near natural light, without letting rays reflect on the screen. If you do need lighting, try to use LED lights as they provide softer, healthier glows.

  4. Avoid the blue light of screens at night to keep your natural sleep/wake cycle and make it easier to fall asleep.
