So, what are you waiting for? Get outside and go!
Many studies show the benefits of being active outdoors. In fact, there have been so many that doctors now write “nature prescriptions1”. A dose of nature to help treat stress, high blood pressure, insomnia and more.
Being outside is beneficial for a variety of reasons: vitamin D from the sun boosts your immune system, fresh air creates a sense of calm, and being away from your computer and technology restores your focus. Add in exercise and you have the makings of the perfect, healthy activity.
1. Running
Slip-on a comfy pair of running shoes and head outside! This is one of the best outdoor activities because it can easily be modified to fit your environment and fitness level. Run on sidewalks, a nature trail, or on the beach. Keep in mind that soft surfaces, such as a dirt path, is the best for your back because it is low impact.
Tip: Add a set of stairs to your run to give your workout an extra boost.
2. HIIT
Find an empty basketball court or playground and turn it into your own personal HIIT zone. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) burns calories fast in a short amount of time. The training consists of quick, alternating sets of high-intensity strength and cardio exercises. Sets are repeated two or three times.
Example HIIT workout (take a 15 second rest between each exercise):
Start with alternating lunges (45 seconds)
High knees (1 minute)
Burpees (45 seconds)
Bicycle crunches (1 minute)
Supermans (45 seconds)
Mountain climbers (1 minute)
Finish with standing donkey kicks (45 seconds)
Repeat the full set three times.
3. Paddleboard
If you live by a lake or an ocean, paddleboarding (also known as SUP, for stand-up paddleboard) is a great full-body exercise. Use your core to keep yourself upright and steady. Your arms and shoulders will also get a good workout as you propel yourself forward.
Tip: If balancing on the board is difficult, modify the workout by sitting. After a few sessions, you can gradually work your way up to kneeling and then standing.
4. Cycling
Like running, cycling is a great outdoor activity that can be modified to your environment and fitness level. You can take your bike out on the sidewalk, in the woods, or on the beach! This exercise is especially good if you want to get your heart rate going, but desire low impact.
5. Hiking
Head into the wilderness with your family, a friend or a pet. Hiking is a great way to be active and enjoy nature. You can go for a peaceful, easy hike or choose rugged paths with steep inclines for a tougher workout.
Tip: When heading out for your hike, be sure to bring plenty of water. If you enjoy hiking solo, let people know where you’re going and what time you expect to return.
